Noise Control

NOISE CONTROL

Peoples perception of noise is very subjective. If you perceive it as unpleasant then it is noise whereas someone else may not find the same sounds at all bothersome.

Glazing and insulation will reduce the outside noise that infiltrates your home but only to a point. The best way to reduce noise is proper site selection and design. Choose a site that is removed as much as possible from busy roads and areas and use materials and techniques that also reduce noise.

SOME DESIGN SOLUTIONS

  1. * Locate quiet rooms as far away from noise sources as possible, without compromising passive solar design principles.
  2. * Install windows away from noise sources, if possible.
  3. * Position noisy areas together and away from quiet areas.
  4. * Avoid placing laundries, bathrooms or living rooms next to, above or below bedrooms without adequate sound insulation.
  5. * Provide extra soundproofing for teenagers' rooms and locate them away from adult living and sleeping areas
    and neighbours.
  6. * Locate driveways/garages away from bedrooms and living rooms.
  7. * Appropriate material selection can reduce noise levels within the home.\
  8. * Choose wall and floor fabric with a high sound reduction index (Rw) to reduce internal noise transmission.
  9. * Install double glazing or laminated glass to reduce external noise transmission into the home.
  10. * Select proprietary noise reduction carpet underlays.
  11. * Choose solid core doors in preference to hollow core doors, as they are more effective sound insulators.
  12. * Soundproof plumbing.
